Lease-to-own vs. buy now, pay later

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) is credit: you own the item right away and repay it in installments, often interest-free over a few payments. Lease-to-own, like Okinus, is a lease: the company owns the item until you finish paying, and the total usually costs much more than the cash price. If you qualify for BNPL and can keep up, it usually costs less.

How buy now, pay later works

The CFPB describes the common pay-in-four product as interest-free credit: you repay the purchase in four parts, usually with the first paid at checkout. Newer, longer BNPL plans work more like installment loans.

  • Upsides

No interest on many pay-in-four plans, you own the item immediately, and approval is quick at checkout.

  • Watch out for

Late fees, interest on longer plans, and fewer dispute rights than a credit card, according to Consumer Reports.

How lease-to-own works

With lease-to-own, the company buys the item from the store and leases it to you. You own it after the last payment or by buying early. Because you can return the item and walk away, it’s not treated as credit, so there’s no APR.

  • Upsides

Easier to qualify for with little or no credit, larger approvals (Okinus describes about $8,000), and you can return the item.

  • Watch out for

A total cost usually far above the cash price, and add-ons that raise the payment.

Which one fits you

BNPL may fit better if…

  • You can qualify, and the purchase is small enough to repay in a few payments.
  • The plan is interest-free, or its APR is low.
  • You want to own the item from day one.

Lease-to-own may fit better if…

  • You were declined for BNPL or other credit.
  • You need a larger amount for furniture or appliances.
  • You value being able to return the item, and plan to buy out early.
Need cash, not an item?Neither BNPL nor lease-to-own pays a bill. For that, compare installment loans or emergency loans.
